Effects of physical exercise on physical function in older adults in residential care: a systematic review and network meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials

This systematic review and network meta-analysis aimed to determine the effects of exercise interventions on the physical function of older adults in residential care. A total of 147 studies involving 11,609 participants were included. The analysis showed that exercise interventions were associated with significantly improved overall physical function in this population. The strongest association was observed with 110-225 minutes per week of exercise, and the greatest improvements were seen with 170 minutes per week. No significant differences were found between exercise types. Subanalyses indicated significant improvements in various physical function-related outcomes. The findings suggest that exercise interventions should be routinely promoted in long-term care facilities for older adults.
