Effects of treating subclinical hypothyroidism in pregnancy in India: Are we treating too many for little gain? A retrospective cohort study

A study involving 4526 pregnant women assessed the impact of treating subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) on short-term pregnancy outcomes. SCH was defined as a certain thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) level. Among those with SCH, 32% were treated, while others were not. Analysis of maternal age, BMI, gestational age at TSH measurement, and other factors was conducted. No significant differences in pregnancy or neonatal outcomes were found between treated and untreated groups. However, a subgroup analysis for a higher TSH level indicated that treated cases had higher rates of large for gestational age and lower rates of low birth weight and small for gestational age. The prevalence of SCH is high in India.
