A dexamethasone-based mouthwash shows promise in preventing chemotherapy-induced stomatitis for early breast cancer patients. In a randomized phase 2 trial, patients undergoing epirubicin/cyclophosphamide or docetaxel/cyclophosphamide were assigned to receive chemotherapy with either mouthwash or oral care alone. Stomatitis incidence was lower (38% vs. 55%) and severity was reduced in the mouthwash group. 87% of patients adhered to the regimen with no severe oral infections. These findings suggest that dexamethasone-based mouthwash safely reduced stomatitis incidence and severity in patients receiving chemotherapy for early breast cancer.
