Efficacy and safety of continuous passive motion and physical therapy in recovery from knee arthroplasty

The effectiveness of continuous passive motion (CPM) versus physical therapy (PT) in postoperative knee rehabilitation after knee arthroplasty was compared in a study involving 557 patients from 6 articles. The analysis revealed no significant difference in passive knee flexion and extension between CPM and PT. Long-term follow-up showed similar outcomes. However, CPM was associated with increased hospitalization costs and care expenses without substantial improvement in knee range of motion or patient satisfaction. The findings suggest that, in knee arthroplasty recovery, PT alone may be as effective as the combination of CPM and PT.
