
A phase II clinical trial investigated the efficacy of intravenous fosphenytoin, a prodrug of phenytoin, in treating acute zoster-associated pain, which is often resistant to nonopioid analgesics. Japanese inpatients were randomly assigned to receive either high-dose fosphenytoin, low-dose fosphenytoin, or placebo. Results showed a significant decrease in pain intensity in both fosphenytoin groups compared to placebo. Adverse events were minimal, indicating good tolerability. Intravenous fosphenytoin emerges as a promising alternative for managing acute zoster-associated pain.
