Efficacy and safety of pharmacological treatments for Lyme neuroborreliosis: an updated systematic review

Efficacy and safety of pharmacological treatments for Lyme neuroborreliosis: an updated systematic review

This study aimed to update evidence-based recommendations for treating Lyme neuroborreliosis (LNB) by reviewing recent literature (2015-2023). The systematic review included 2 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and 5 non-randomized studies (NRS). Results from meta-analyses indicated no significant difference in neurological symptom outcomes at 12 months between doxycycline and beta-lactam antibiotics. Extended antibiotic treatment didn't show benefits for LNB. Additionally, recent studies reaffirmed existing guidelines, demonstrating comparable efficacy between doxycycline and beta-lactam antibiotics. Furthermore, evidence did not support the use of steroids for facial palsy caused by LNB, in line with previous findings.
