A study comparing three commonly used antiretroviral therapy (ART) regimens for HIV-1 during pregnancy and postpartum found that dolutegravir-based ART, particularly in combination with emtricitabine and tenofovir alafenamide, is safer and more effective than efavirenz-based ART. The research, conducted on 643 pregnant women in multiple countries, showed no significant differences in adverse events between the regimens, but a lower mortality rate in infants born to mothers on dolutegravir-based ART. At 50 weeks postpartum, the dolutegravir-containing groups showed comparable virological efficacy to the efavirenz-containing group. Overall, the study supports the recommendation of dolutegravir-based ART for pregnant women with HIV-1.
