A randomized clinical trial was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of uninterrupted administration of transdermal nitroglycerin (NTG) in reducing the frequency and severity of menopause-related hot flashes. The study included perimenopausal or postmenopausal women experiencing seven or more hot flashes per day. The participants were randomly assigned to receive either transdermal NTG or placebo patches. The results showed that over a period of 5 and 12 weeks, NTG did not significantly decrease the frequency of any hot flashes or moderate-to-severe hot flashes compared to placebo. However, the use of NTG was associated with a higher incidence of early headaches. Therefore, the study concluded that continuous use of NTG did not provide sustained relief for hot flashes in menopausal women.
