A recent systematic review and meta-analysis investigated the efficacy of rifaximin, a nonabsorbable antibiotic, in treating abdominal bloating and distension in patients with functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGID). Out of 1426 articles, 10 trials involving 3326 patients were analyzed. Rifaximin administration, typically for 1 to 2 weeks at doses ranging from 400 to 1650 mg per day, showed a higher likelihood of symptom improvement compared to placebo. However, doses less than 1200 mg/day didn't significantly differ from placebo. Rifaximin also demonstrated a reduction in bloating scores compared to placebo. These findings suggest rifaximin's potential in managing symptoms of bloating and distension in FGID patients.
