Efficacy of sucrose and povidone–iodine mixtures in peritoneal dialysis catheter exit-site care

A recent study investigated the effectiveness of sucrose and povidone–iodine (SPI) mixtures in preventing exit-site infections (ESI) in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. Among 82 patients studied over a median follow-up of 39 months, those treated with SPI showed significantly lower ESI incidence compared to the non-SPI group (0.70 episodes per patient-year). Notably, SPI use was associated with better second and third-ESI-free survival rates, as indicated by the log-rank test (p < 0.01 for both). Cox regression analysis confirmed SPI as a significant predictor of reduced second and third ESI episodes (HR 0.22; 95% CI 0.10–0.52 and HR 0.22; 95% CI 0.07–0.73, respectively). These findings suggest SPI as a promising strategy for managing ESI in PD patients.
