Topical Steroids for Acute-Onset Olfactory Dysfunction in COVID-19 Patients: Efficacy and Outcomes

To assess the effect of topical steroids on acute‐onset olfactory dysfunction in patients infected with COVID‐19. The improvement of olfactory score at 2 (standardized mean difference [SMD] = 0.7272, 95% confidence interval = [0.3851, 1.0692], p < 0.0001, I2 = 62.1%) and 4 weeks posttreatment (SMD = 1.0440 [0.6777, 1.4102], p < 0.0001, I2 = 61.2%) was statistically greater in the treatment than control group. However, there was no significant difference (odds ratio [OR] = 1.4345 [0.9525, 2.1604], p = 0.0842, I2 = 45.4%) in the incidence of fully recovery from anosmia/hyposmia between the treatment and control groups. Although this meta‐analysis found that topical steroids improved the acute onset olfactory dysfunction caused by COVID‐19, there was no difference in the rate of full olfactory recovery between treated and control patients.

A GBD 2021 analysis across 204 countries found 239.7 million prevalent and 124.3 million incident acne cases globally in 2021, with 5.126 million DALYs. Age-standardized prevalence, incidence, and DALY rates increased since 1990. Women and high-SDI regions had higher burdens, while China’s burden is projected to rise over the next 15 years.

PRGF and Guided Tissue Regeneration in Endodontic Surgery

A retrospective study of 161 adults found that plasma rich in growth factors (PRGF) improved early soft tissue healing after endodontic surgery when used alone. Combined with a collagen membrane, PRGF reduced analgesic use, adverse effects and quality-of-life impact while preserving clinical attachment. However, benefits were limited when PRGF was combined with membrane and bone grafting.

A systematic review of 134 patients with deep dermatophytosis found that immunodeficiency, including renal transplantation and CARD9 or STAT3 mutations, increases the risk of invasive infection. Trichophyton rubrum was the most common pathogen, with dissemination involving lymph nodes and, rarely, bone, lung and brain. Early diagnosis and prolonged antifungal treatment may be needed.

A global consensus of 53 multidisciplinary experts, coordinated by the International Dermoscopy Society, provides evidence-based recommendations for lentigo maligna diagnosis, treatment and follow-up. Margin-controlled surgery, imiquimod or radiotherapy may be considered for selected lesions.
