This study focuses on the concerning impact of electronic cigarettes (e-cigs) on airway health, particularly among teenagers. The study indicates that e-cig usage disrupts the protective airway epithelial barrier, which plays a crucial role in defending against viruses and pathogens. Exposure to e-cig nicotine extract, as well as flavored aerosols, led to a significant decrease in the barrier's integrity, even at non-cytotoxic levels. This disruption was especially pronounced when combined with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection, a leading cause of lower respiratory infections. The study highlights the urgent need for increased awareness of the adverse respiratory effects of e-cigs and their potential role in exacerbating health issues.
