
A recent study has found that a new, non-invasive electrophysiology protocol shows promise in improving the diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a challenging condition to diagnose. The protocol involves compound muscle action potential scans and nerve excitability testing. The study examined a group of individuals suspected of having motor neuron disease and found that the protocol accurately identified 24 out of 33 individuals with ALS who were previously undiagnosed using the current standard methods. Additionally, it identified 8 out of 13 individuals who did not meet the current diagnostic criteria for ALS. These findings suggest that the new protocol could enhance diagnostic accuracy and sensitivity compared to the existing standard approach.
