Elevated β-hydroxybutyrate levels promote colorectal cancer growth and metastasis through ACAT1

The study investigated the association between β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), a differential metabolite in colorectal cancer (CRC), and CRC progression. The researchers confirmed the elevated level of BHB in CRC and found that treatment with pathological levels of BHB accelerated CRC proliferation and metastasis. They also discovered that the major rate-limiting enzyme ACAT1 is upregulated in human CRC tissues and that targeting BHB and ACAT1 may offer a new therapeutic avenue for CRC treatment.
