Endothelial Glycocalyx Degradation Patterns in Sepsis-Associated Pediatric Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome

A recent study has shed light on potential biomarkers for pediatric acute respiratory distress syndrome (PARDS) in children with sepsis. The study focused on pulmonary microvascular endothelial glycocalyx (EGCX) degradation and its association with PARDS development. The findings revealed significantly higher levels of heparan sulfate and syndecan-1 in sepsis-associated PARDS patients. Notably, higher levels of N-sulfated disaccharides were linked to severe PARDS cases. These results suggest that EGCX degradation biomarkers, particularly heparan sulfate and syndecan-1, may offer valuable insights into endothelial dysfunction and the pathobiology of PARDS in pediatric sepsis patients.
