The study investigated the potential impact of higher band 3 expression, found in people with the GP.Mur blood type, on physical performance. The researchers recruited elite male athletes, of whom 36.1% had GP.Mur, to perform exhaustive exercise testing on a treadmill. They found that the GP.Mur athletes had higher respiratory frequencies and a slightly lower tidal volume, resulting in a slightly larger increase in ventilation as the workload intensified. This pattern of hyperventilation utilized a greater fraction of time for expiration than inspiration, leading to a reduction in pCO2 and potentially extending exercise capacity in high-level sports.
