Estimated lifetime benefit of novel pharmacological therapies in patients with type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease

This study aimed to estimate the long-term benefits of combining sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors and mineralocorticoid-receptor antagonists (MRA) for patients with type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease (CKD). Using data from relevant trials, the combined treatment's effects were applied to control groups. Results showed that the hazard ratio for the primary outcome (composite of kidney-related events) was 0.50, indicating a significant benefit. At age 50, estimated event-free survival with combination treatment was 16.7 years compared to 10.0 years with standard treatment, leading to a gain of 6.7 years. Even conservative estimates suggested a gain of 2.5 years. The study suggests potential substantial increases in kidney health and survival through combined treatment.
