Evaluating depth of invasion across oral cavity subsites as part of the AJCC 8th edition

A study spanning 2010 to 2017 evaluated the overall survival of OCSCCa patients across different oral cavity subsites. The results indicated that for tumors of the oral tongue, DOI greater than 5mm and 10mm only correlated with worse overall survival in cases with tumor sizes of ≤2cm and >2cm, respectively. However, this prognostic impact was not observed in other tumor locations. This study challenges the current staging schema for DOI in OCSCCa, suggesting that it may not be universally applicable across all oral cavity subsites. The findings underscore the need for a more tailored approach to staging and treatment planning for oral cancer patients.
