Evaluation of the Dawes–Redman Algorithm for Identifying Fetal Wellbeing at Term

The study evaluated the Dawes–Redman algorithm using 30 years of retrospective data to assess its effectiveness in identifying fetal wellbeing at term. Data from 3316 antepartum fetal heart rate (FHR) traces within 48 hours before delivery were analyzed. The algorithm demonstrated high specificity (90.7%) and high negative predictive value (NPV) in low-risk settings but low sensitivity (18.2%) in detecting adverse pregnancy outcomes (APO). Specificity remained consistent regardless of the timing of FHR assessment (0–24 hours vs. 24–48 hours). While reliable in confirming fetal wellbeing, its utility in high-risk scenarios is limited, necessitating further clinical evaluation for FHR traces not meeting the criteria.
