A new study compared the pre and post-COVID-19 infection levels of arterial stiffness, which is a marker associated with the ageing and function of our arteries. The researchers found that in individuals diagnosed with mild COVID-19, artery and central cardiovascular function were affected by the disease two to three months after infection. Side effects include stiffer and more dysfunctional arteries that could lead to the development of cardiovascular disease. The study supports the prediction among vascular physiologists that cardiovascular disease will increase in the future due to COVID-19 infections.
