Excluding Pregnant Participants from RCTs Harms Health Outcomes

The decision-analytic study modeled the health impact of excluding pregnant individuals from randomized controlled trials using case studies like thalidomide, COVID-19 vaccines, and dolutegravir. Findings suggest that RCT inclusion would have prevented significant adverse outcomes, such as thousands of birth defects and maternal deaths, while offering benefits that far exceed the risks and costs. Systematic inclusion of pregnant people in RCTs could accelerate the detection of adverse effects and improve maternal-child health.
