Results from a cohort study nested within the CALGB/SWOG 80702 trial showed that physical activity positively impacted disease-free survival in stage III colon cancer patients, even with high inflammatory markers. The 3-year disease-free survival rate was 88.4% for patients with low inflammation and sufficient physical activity. In comparison, survival rates dropped for those with low inflammation and insufficient physical activity (84.9%), and further declined in patients with intermediate (78.0%) and high inflammation (79.7%) and insufficient activity. However, patients with intermediate (87.3%) and high inflammation (84.4%) who engaged in sufficient physical activity had survival rates similar to those with low inflammation. These findings highlight the benefit of physical activity in improving survival outcomes regardless of inflammatory burden.
