Radiation-induced lung injury (RILI) resulting from thoracic irradiation for cancer lacks curative strategies. This study analyzed metabolic changes in RILI patients using exhaled breath condensate (EBC). Metabolomic analysis revealed distinct metabolic alterations in RILI patients, including increased lactate levels and lipid, amino acid, and carbohydrate metabolism changes. These changes, particularly in the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, may support the energy demands of fibroproliferation during chronic wound repair. The study highlights the potential of noninvasive metabolomic analysis for understanding lung diseases and developing therapeutic targets.
