Experiences of Patients Living with Retrograde Cricopharyngeal Dysfunction

Patients with retrograde cricopharyngeal dysfunction (RCPD), a condition preventing normal burping, shared their experiences through qualitative interviews. Onset during adolescence, RCPD caused social isolation, productivity loss, and mental health challenges. Participants, initially unaware of RCPD, learned about it through social media. Despite diagnostic challenges, botulinum toxin injections and dilation led to symptom resolution in 84.6% of cases. Enhanced physician awareness is crucial for timely diagnosis and improved management of RCPD, as emphasized by patients.
