Expiratory airflow at 7–8 years of age in children born extremely low birthweight from 14 years before to 14 years after the introduction of exogenous surfactant

A recent study investigated the impact of exogenous surfactant introduction on survivors born with extremely low birth weight (ELBW) from 1977 to 2005. Researchers analyzed expiratory airflow data of 596 ELBW children at 7-8 years old. Surprisingly, there was little overall improvement in airflow over the 28-year period. However, a significant finding revealed that those with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) experienced a decline in expiratory airflow, while those without BPD saw some improvement.
