Exploring Customized vs. Non-Customized Birthweight Centiles in Perinatal Health

A comparative study across several countries examined perinatal outcomes in term infants who were either small for gestational age (SGA) or large for gestational age (LGA), using both non-customized and customized birthweight centiles. The study found that both SGA and LGA infants faced increased risks for stillbirth, neonatal death, infant death, low Apgar score at 5 minutes, and admission to the neonatal intensive care unit compared to infants born at average gestational age (AGA). However, the risks were similar regardless of whether non-customized or customized charts were used. The study suggests that using customized charts for SGA/LGA infants may not provide significant benefits in identifying those at risk of adverse perinatal outcomes.
