Exploring the Link between Parenting Styles and Major Depressive Disorder among Chinese Freshmen: Results from a Large Cohort Study

This study investigated the effect of perceived parenting styles on the incidence of major depressive disorder (MDD) among Chinese freshmen. The results showed that maternal overprotection and disharmony in the relationship between parents increased the risk of new-onset MDD in freshmen. Baseline depressive symptoms also increased the risk of new-onset MDD. These findings suggest that parenting styles and baseline depressive symptoms are important risk factors for MDD among Chinese freshmen.
