
A study investigating the link between air pollution and childhood allergic sensitization, particularly in the context of climate change-related smoke events, found no association between exposure to severe particulate matter from a mine fire during early development and allergic sensitization seven years later. However, chronic low exposure to background particulate matter was positively linked to sensitization to dust in childhood. The study suggests that consistent, low-level exposure to PM2.5 in early life may have a stronger association with allergic sensitization than sporadic high exposure levels during events like landscape fires.
