Lead exposure from sources like battery recycling, leaded paint, and more is as harmful as the combined effects of outdoor PM2.5 pollution and household air pollution, reveals an analysis in The Lancet Planetary Health journal. This exposure poses significant health risks, including brain damage and cardiovascular disease, with almost 95% of lead-related deaths attributed to heart issues. The study highlights the high economic cost, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. It estimates a loss of 765 million IQ points in children under five in 2019, mostly in LMICs, potentially reducing their lifetime income by up to 12%.
