A recent study has found that faecal calprotectin is a dependable diagnostic tool for differentiating patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) from those with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). This is significant as both conditions share similar symptoms. The study reviewed 17 research studies involving 1956 patients and revealed that faecal calprotectin has a sensitivity of 85.8% and specificity of 91.7%. It demonstrated higher sensitivity in Western countries when the cut-off value was ≤50 μg/g. This non-invasive test can help clinicians make more accurate diagnoses, particularly in Western regions.
