A study investigated familial connections between idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIMs) and cancer. Using data from Swedish registers, researchers studied 8,460 relatives of IIM patients and 41,127 relatives of non-IIM individuals. While no significant overall familial link between IIM and cancer was found, a connection was noted in male relatives of dermatomyositis patients. This link was also evident in cases of IIM and cancer diagnosed before 50 years of age, particularly in offspring. Notably, myeloid malignancies and liver cancer showed significant familial associations in male relatives.
