Family Engagement in the Adult Cardiac Intensive Care Unit: A Survey of Family Engagement Practices in the Cardiac Critical Care Trials Network

A survey was conducted among 39 contemporary cardiac intensive care units (CICUs) in North America to assess family engagement practices. The study revealed that common family engagement practices include open visitation, information and support to families, structured care conferences, and family participation in rounds. The median engagement practice score was 5 out of 9, indicating variability in adoption across CICUs. Strategies such as family presence during rounds, communication, and family meetings were employed to promote family engagement, while barriers included COVID-related visitation policies and resource limitations. The study highlights the need for addressing and standardizing family engagement practices in CICUs.
