Fascia Lata: Another Workhorse for Complex Skull Base Reconstruction

Fascia Lata: Another Workhorse for Complex Skull Base Reconstruction

The study aimed to present the outcomes of using fascia lata (FL) in multiple ways to reconstruct complex skull base defects in 50 consecutive patients who underwent endoscopic skull base reconstruction. The FL was used as a "button" graft, free graft inlay/onlay, and as a button graft combined with onlay for primary and revision cases. The most common pathologies treated were meningioma and craniopharyngioma. The successful reconstruction with FL was achieved in 92% of cases, with only 8% requiring revision for post-op CSF leak. Donor-site complications were rare, with only 2% of post-op seroma. The study concludes that FL, in combination with nasoseptal flap, offers a versatile option for the reconstruction of challenging defects with excellent outcomes and minimal morbidity.
