FDA Approves First Vaccine to Prevent Disease Caused by Chikungunya Virus

The U.S. FDA approves Ixchiq, the first chikungunya vaccine for those aged 18 and above at risk of exposure. Chikungunya, transmitted by infected mosquitoes, poses a global health threat, with over 5 million cases reported in the last 15 years. Symptoms include fever, joint pain, rash, and headache. Ixchiq, administered as a single dose, contains a weakened virus. Clinical studies showed common side effects like headache and muscle pain. Severe reactions occurred in 1.6% of recipients, leading to hospitalization.
