The US FDA has approved Pivya (pivmecillinam) tablets by Utility Therapeutics Ltd for treating uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs) in adult females. UTIs are prevalent among women, with about half experiencing them at least once in their lifetime. Clinical trials compared Pivya to placebo, another antibacterial drug, and ibuprofen, focusing on composite response rates encompassing clinical and microbiological improvements. Pivya demonstrated significant efficacy, with notably higher response rates compared to placebo and ibuprofen. Though slightly lower than the comparator drug, Pivya still showed substantial effectiveness. The approval of Pivya offers clinicians a new tool in managing UTIs in adult females, addressing a common medical issue and supporting ongoing efforts to combat antimicrobial resistance.
