
Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), a lung disease associated with increased lung cancer risk, may independently affect cancer malignancy and prognosis. In a recent study, researchers explored the impact of lung fibroblast (LF)-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) on non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) malignancy within the IPF microenvironment. They discovered that LF cells from IPF patients exhibited myofibroblast differentiation and cellular senescence. Additionally, IPF LF-derived EVs had altered microRNA compositions and promoted the proliferation of NSCLC cells, mainly through the enrichment of miR-19a. The study suggests that targeting the secretion of IPF LF-derived EV miR-19a and associated signaling pathways could be a potential therapeutic strategy for managing IPF and lung cancer progression.
