A study assessed the effectiveness of flecainide versus metoprolol in treating children with frequent premature ventricular contractions (PVCs). Nineteen patients with a baseline PVC burden of over 15% were treated with either drug, with a two-week drug-free interval between treatments. The study revealed that flecainide reduced PVC burden by an estimated 10.6 percentage points compared to 2.4 percentage points with metoprolol, showing a significant difference of 8.2 percentage points (P=0.031). Flecainide also reduced a PVC burden below 5% in 9 of 18 patients, compared to 1 of 17 with metoprolol. Flecainide was thus shown to be more effective than metoprolol in reducing PVCs in children.
