A study on 14,935 such patients with new diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) found that 18.4% received podiatric care before DFU diagnosis. Despite older age and more comorbidities, these patients had lower rates of death and major amputation (70% vs. 74% in non-podiatric group) over 13.5 months. Survival rates at 36 months were significantly higher with podiatric care (26.3% vs. 22.8%). Foot and ankle care correlated with an 11% lower likelihood of death and amputation and a 9% lower likelihood of major amputation. This suggests podiatric care may reduce diabetes-related amputations in kidney failure patients with DFUs.
