From Illness to Fatality: A Meta-Analysis of COVID-19 Severity and Mortality in Iran

This study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of published documents in Iran to identify risk factors associated with the severity and death from COVID-19. Sixty-nine studies were included in the analysis, which found that age, male gender, diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, cerebrovascular disease, chronic kidney disease, headache, dyspnea, increased white blood cell count, decreased lymphocyte count, increased blood urea nitrogen, increased creatinine, and vitamin D deficiency were significantly associated with death from COVID-19. Cardiovascular disease was the only significant risk factor for disease severity. The study recommends using these risk factors for therapeutic and health interventions and updating clinical guidelines to determine patients' prognoses.
