The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is evaluating new guidelines from the World Health Organization (WHO) regarding non-sugar sweeteners like aspartame and stevia. The WHO guideline states that these sweeteners do not aid in weight loss and may increase the risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Indian brands use non-sugar sweeteners extensively in soft drinks, breakfast cereals, ice creams, and juices as "healthy" alternatives to sugar. Currently, there are no restrictions on the use of sweeteners in India. Health groups are welcoming the WHO recommendations and emphasize the importance of educating consumers about the use of non-sugar sweeteners. The FSSAI is also proposing front-of-pack labeling for salt, sugar, and fat content on packaged foods. The demand for diet and no-sugar foods and drinks has been increasing in India. WHO's recommendations are based on available evidence and cover both synthetic and natural sweeteners.
