
This study explored the relationship between periodontitis, type 2 diabetes, and the oral microbiome. By analyzing the composition and functional profile of the subgingival microbiome using metagenomic analysis, researchers identified dysregulated metabolic pathways enriched in periodontitis and diabetic patients. These pathways are involved in amino acid metabolism, fatty acid biosynthesis, adipocytokine signaling, iron homeostasis, nucleotide metabolism, and the synthesis of peptidoglycan and lipopolysaccharides. The study suggests that endotoxemia, inflammatory cytokines, dysbiosis, and inflammation contribute to changes in immune cells and gene expression related to the immune response.
