Further Validity Evidence for Patient‐Specific Virtual Reality Temporal Bone Surgical Simulation

Patient-specific virtual reality simulation shows promise for preoperative rehearsal in cochlear implant surgery. Validity evidence was collected by comparing trainees and attendings' performances and drilled volumes with postoperative imaging. Trainees excelled in cortical mastoidectomy and facial recess, while attendings performed better in RW cochleostomy despite making more violations. Attendings' drilled volumes were closer to postoperative imaging values. Trainees achieved a higher CISAT performance score (22.0 vs. 18.4 points), possibly due to missing visual cues. This study highlights differences in trainee and attending performance and introduces a novel volume comparison method for validating patient-specific VR simulations in temporal bone surgery.
