Gastrointestinal manifestations in symptomatic Coronavirus disease - 19 patients and its relevance in predicting severity and outcome

A study conducted in a hospital in India investigated the gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms in COVID-19 patients and their association with disease severity and mortality. Out of 3,842 hospitalized patients, 55% were symptomatic, with 7.1% experiencing GI symptoms. The most common GI symptoms were diarrhoea, anorexia, and vomiting. Logistic regression analysis revealed higher odds of moderate-to-severe disease in patients with any GI symptom, particularly anorexia. The adjusted analysis confirmed that the presence of any GI symptom was a significant predictor of mortality, even after considering respiratory failure, age, sex, and comorbidities. These findings highlight the importance of studying GI involvement in COVID-19 and its impact on patient outcomes.
