The study investigated the effects of gemigliptin, a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor, on cardiac function and compared it with glimepiride in patients with type 2 diabetes. Sixty patients were assigned to either the gemigliptin or glimepiride group and observed for 24 weeks. Gemigliptin reduced insulin resistance, inflammation, blood pressure, and LDL cholesterol levels, and improved body composition compared to glimepiride therapy. Cardiac biomarkers did not change significantly in either group, but left ventricular end diastolic volume decreased in the gemigliptin group. The study found that gemigliptin had a comparable glucose-lowering efficacy without adverse effects on cardiac function or biomarkers of myocardial injury or heart failure.
