Gender disparities in pre-school wheeze hospitalizations: A call for further research

This study aimed to describe the hospital presentation and cost of preschool wheeze in two hospitals in Auckland, New Zealand. The study found that preschool wheeze accounted for a larger proportion of acute hospital presentations for Māori children compared to non-Māori children and that Māori children had increased odds of preschool wheeze readmissions. The length of hospital stay for preschool wheeze episodes increased with household deprivation. Clinical severity and treatment intensity did not vary with child sex, age, ethnicity, or household deprivation. The study also found poor adherence to preschool wheeze guidelines. The estimated median direct medical costs of each preschool wheeze episode were NZ$1279.
