Genetic Study Reveals Link Between Insulin Levels and Cognitive Function

Unlocking the links between type 2 diabetes, glycaemic traits, and cognitive function, this study utilized Mendelian randomization with brain imaging-derived phenotypes. Although no direct link found between diabetes and cognition, genetically higher fasting proinsulin predicted poorer cognitive performance (univariable beta: −0.022; multivariable beta: −0.027). Proinsulin also influenced brain IDPs and cognition independently. This highlights proinsulin as a potential target for cognitive intervention, urging deeper exploration into brain mechanisms.
