A genome-wide association study involving 1481 adults from the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966 reveals intriguing findings on the genetic factors behind dental caries. The study identified three distinct caries phenotypes: dentin caries, enamel caries, and caries severity. Notably, in females, specific loci on chromosomes 2, 5, and 15 exhibited significant associations with caries severity, while in males, a novel link emerged between chromosome 5 and dentin caries. These findings suggest a potential genetic basis for caries susceptibility in adults. Future applications may include identifying individuals at risk for caries, irrespective of behavioral or environmental factors.
