Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index is a predictor of tolerability of antifibrotic therapy and mortality risk in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis

A study involving 301 idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) patients receiving antifibrotic therapy found that over a third of patients had malnutrition at the start of treatment. Malnutrition was associated with reduced tolerability of antifibrotic therapy and predicted early termination of treatment. It was also identified as a risk factor for adverse outcomes, independent of age, sex, or lung function. Patients with malnutrition had higher rates of discontinuation of antifibrotic therapy, particularly due to gastrointestinal issues. Furthermore, those with malnutrition had shorter survival compared to those without. The study highlights the importance of assessing nutritional status in managing IPF patients.
