A study compared second-generation basal insulin glargine 300 U/mL (Gla-300) with first-generation glargine 100 U/mL (Gla-100). Using healthcare claims data, adult patients with type 1 or type 2 diabetes initiating insulin between 2016 and 2020 were analyzed. Gla-300 users showed higher persistence rates, with 83% (T1DM) and 44% (T2DM) less likelihood of discontinuation after 24 months. In T2DM, Gla-300 was associated with 12% fewer acute hospitalized events and lower healthcare costs over 1-3 years. These findings suggest Gla-300's superiority in persistence, reduced acute complications, and healthcare expenditure compared to Gla-100 in real-life settings.
