Glucagon‐like peptide‐1 therapy in people with obesity restores natural killer cell metabolism and effector function

The present investigation aimed to investigate whether long-acting glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) analogues, which are used to treat obesity, could restore the function of natural killer (NK) cells in people with obesity (PWO). The researchers conducted a 6-month study involving 20 PWO who received once-weekly GLP-1 therapy (semaglutide). The results showed that GLP-1 therapy improved NK cell function, as evidenced by increased cytotoxicity and production of interferon-γ/granzyme B. Additionally, the study revealed increases in a metabolic pathway critical for NK cell cytokine production. Interestingly, these improvements were independent of weight loss. The findings suggest that the restoration of NK cell functionality may contribute to the overall benefits of GLP-1 therapy in PWO.
